FÜSUN APART
Füsun Apart is situated in the village of Ovacık
1,000 feet above sea level in the foothills of Baba Daðý (Father
Mountain), which has a peak of 6000feet. Its elevated position
attracts a pleasant breeze in mid-summer. Ovacýk has a primary
school, two mosques and in recent years several small shops and a
variety of restaurants and hotels.
The adjacent village is Hisarönü (meaning ‘in front of the castle’).
This is where most of the shops, bars and restaurants are located.
It is found by walking down the main road and will take 5 to 10
minutes to reach. Hisarönü boasts a health centre, post office,
bank, cash machines, Turkish baths and mosque. Every Monday there is
a local market where you will find a selection of stalls selling
fruit and vegetables, spices, clothing, household goods and
souvenirs. Prices are reasonable but feel free to barter as well.
Trading starts in the morning and continues until late afternoon.
The nearest and most popular beach is at Ölü Deniz (meaning ’dead
sea’), which takes 10 minutes by local transport. It gets its name
from the secluded lagoon at the far end of the beach. There are
umbrellas and sunbeds for hire on the beach and an abundance of
shops, bars and restaurants, along the seafront and beyond.
The nearest town is Fethiye, some 15 minutes away by bus. The town
is situated on the site of the ancient town of Telmessos, renowned
for its wise scholars. The town is steeped in history with Lycian
tombs, an amphitheatre and the ruins of a fortress built by the
Knights of the Crusades. The town has a pleasant harbour, museum,
shops, bars and restaurants.
As this peninsula is surrounded by water there are a wide variety of
activities including scuba diving, snorkelling, parasailing, banana
rides, water skiing and windsurfing. Most of these activities can be
booked through one of the many tour companies in Hisarönü. Boat
trips are available from either Ölü Deniz (including a visit to St
Nicholas Island—residence and alleged burial site of St Nic himself)
or from Fethiye (taking in the marina of Göcek).
Air borne activities are a speciality of this area. You can jump
6,000feet from Baba Dağı with a paraglider, tour the area by
microlight, go up in a seaplane or try out a helicopter ride. These
sports are not without risk and accidents do happen. Make sure you
are fully insured.
